What does “SUV” stand for? SUV stands for “Sport Utility Vehicle,”
and this is one of the American dreams to own a SUV. David Goeway,
author of “Careful, You May Run Out of Planet”, introduces the idea of
big cars like, SUVs, “…, the vehicle that combines the most potent mix
of American mythologies is the sport utility vehicle( SUV),…(p 106).”
The fascination with American frontier, Goeway goes on with idea of
how SUV are accepted in American society and how their names are
related to American culture, and what are the reason SUV manufactures
are rising up high as far as the issue of profit concerns.
Now, we can categorize the modern SUV into two different points of
views, first we can talk about the benefits of the SUVs and second in
contrast we have to mention the negative sides of the them too, since
the are made by humans there is always a place for error or negative
out comes.
The notion that “…, the modern SUV represents a preeminent symbol of
American popular culture (p 106).” SUV are very safe to drive around
cities and specially on the High-ways, and they are more liable to
single vehicle accidents. The only or better to say the most common
reason for SUVs to have higher liability compare to cars is the size of
them. All through out the centuries size was a big issue for humans and
SUVs are most likely are satisfying the need of hunger for a wider and
bigger vehicles.
The most obvious ironies are perhaps best noticed in the ability of
SUVs to get off the road and show any problem/s for the drives, “ …,
these vehicles are designed for rugged, off the road motoring,….(p
106).” Having the power to mostly go or take your vehicle off the road,
where regular vehicles aren’t able to go, is one of the unshared and
unique options for SUVs.
Another most distinct ironies are perhaps best observed in the SUV
models are the names chosen by the manufactures, “Many vehicles are
directly evocative of America’s western frontier mythology,…(p 106-7)”.
Naming or using western names for SUV is another way of showing the
accepted idea of sports utility vehicles in Americans families.
As far as the “Americas popular mythology” is concern, the SUV
informs and casts back the principal components of the mythology.
According to “SUV.com/news,” in the year of 1999 sales of pickups out
sold SUVs by a margin of 164,036 unites. In the next few years sport
utilities will become the industries largest segment with an increase
in all of the categories. George Parker represents auto makers
interests, and “says that considering the speed at the 40mph rate, all
the SUVs provided good protection.” Having good protection in a vehicle
and be able to trust the safety of a vehicle has been a great issue
through out the history of automobile.
However, we have consider the fact that SUVs are human creation they
must have problems or effects on other matters like nature or we have
to ask this question, the facts that SUV manufactures presents us, are
they all 100% guaranteed or do they show us the other side of the
story?
For example, if you look a the commercial for the SUV manufacturers,
it is impossible and I’m saying impossible because this is how
advertisement business works, they will never talk about how much SUVs
are hurting global warming and taking-out fresh air because of their
increase of burning fossil fuel and the big gas tank they all have.
Now, I introducing the other side of the story, the side that most
SUV manufacturers would not bother care or provide for the American
society because they know it will destroy their market, and considering
at the same time it will destroy “American Mythology and Love affair
with the sports utility vehicles .”
As today’s world does become more dangerous for alive species
including human-beings, “Carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere have
risen by about 25 percent in the last century (p 114),” this is mostly
related to the world wide increase in gasoline. By making more SUV we
are shipping more carbon dioxide to the society, the society that
includes thousands and thousands of living species like animals, and
humans. By doing this we are creating an environment with less fresh
air. Not having enough fresh air to breath, we will face with different
cancers or diseases, the kind diseases or cancer we might not survive.
Perhaps the most important fact we have to keep in mind is do we
need special license to drive a SUV? A five thousands three hundred
pound vehicle, measuring over 17 feet in length and more than 6 feet
height, just imagine an average woman size, about 5’4ft tall and 130lb,
driving this massive, gigantic vehicle. Facts are showing the number
female SUV drives are increasing every year, so just imagine our
average female, about 5’4ft tall and 130lb, driving this vehicle. What
do you think? Can she really able to control this massive vehicle?
Furthermore, tests have repeatedly shown that smaller cars get pulverized in collision with monstrous SUVs:
Even in reality minor collisions, when large SUVs such as the Ford Excursion, with its massive momentum and weight, impact smaller cars, such as the Ford Escort, the results are typically catastrophic,…, I think that large vehicles such as Ford Excursion should require tougher licensing and additional driver training.
Indeed, sports utility vehicles are providing very unique options
and features for their consumers and having a bigger, massive car helps
individuals and families (Americans) to move around more comfortably.
But they (SUV) are certainly come with negative effects to the nature
and to the other people in society.
Now, we can see the interesting and strong link between sport
utility vehicles and the American culture. SUVs are part of American
Mythology and this tradition is getting stronger and stronger every
day, no matter how much SUVs get bigger, higher or effect our global
warming, Americans will continue purchasing and using SUVs. And the
only common reason for Americans to continue purchasing SUVs could be
the size, the great and fully loaded features or not really caring
about their society, what do you think?
