Distance Learning can be a convenient way to pursue your education, but it requires dedication and perseverence. Don't think that Distance Learning means a below-par education.
Student Commitment
No doubt about it - Distance Learning requires commitment. Unless you are geniunely interested in the subject matter you may find it hard to hit the books. However, distance learning students usually show a clear interest in their progression,
and therefore their time is not wasted on courses that they are only
taking for credit.
Flexibility
As long as the distance student can work without distraction, he or she can reach a high standard. Most are able able to concentrate on the subject
matter fully.
Distance courses can be cheaper than a traditional classroom education because there is less expense to maintain an infrastructure of school buildings. Internet courses do not even have the postage expense of earlier years, so the
cost to complete course assignments is minimal. There is
no waiting for weeks for assessments to be returned, and
this makes it easier for the student to get on with their work at their
own pace.
Distance learning courses fit into a variety of lifestyles because they allow the student to pursue everyday activities without missing classes. Everybody knows that situations arise which can take students
away from their studies, but Distance Learning students can deal with these emergencies without losing class time. In the case of an extended event, courses can be put aside and resumed when the
situation has been resolved.
Different options for different lifestyles
Distance learning is attractive to those interested in
continuing study after settling into a career or starting a family.
There are many reasons why we can't simply put life on hold
to take a course, and distance learning is sometimes the only way
people are able to get the training they need.
Distance learning should not mean
inferior courses or exorbitant
fees. Anyone who is unable to take regular classes should have the option of distance learning. In England, Oxford College ODL and
Oxford Distance Learning have designed courses for the visually impaired, and they are planning other courses for people with other particular impairments.
Grading
Distance learning
courses are not easy. The student must be aware of the responsibility for aborbing lesson material, and this may mean doing extra assignments. The grading of distance learning course can be more intensive than with classroom taught courses because students must illustrate their grasp of the material in essay form. This is
a particularly important step in the learning process because the student
needs to be able to analyse and question the material they are learning. This is also useful for maintaining interest in the course work and showing to the distance students that they are responsible for their own development.
