Students wishing to attend an American university must take a standardized test called the SAT. Most students will take the SAT at least twice - the first time during their junior year of high school and the second time prior to making university entrance applications.

SAT stands for Scholastic Assessment Test. It was previously known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test, but is best known by its acronym. Although most students cringe at the thought of taking the SAT, it is a necessary step for entering university.

Without a good SAT score, your chances of being accepted by your university of choice are slim. This is why SAT preparation is the essential for getting your best score possible.

SAT preparation can be done by the individual student, but many find it more efficient to take a course or to study with a private tutor. Students wishing to do SAT preparation on their own can purchase a study book which should give specific examples about SAT questions. A good book should also include tips on how to mentally prepare for the SAT.

Taking an SAT preparation course, however, can be a good investment in your future. A good course will prepare students in a variety of ways, both academically and emotionally. One of the keys of SAT preparation is learning how to approach the test. If you are relaxed and have a positive outlook you are much more likely to receive a higher SAT score.

An SAT preparation course will also give you specific examples of SAT questions, and teach you how to detect "trick" questions. It should also include several trial tests so that you are well prepared for the real thing.

It is essential to take an SAT preparation course at least 12 weeks before the actual test. It does you no good to cram for the SAT -- in fact cramming may even make your score worse by overwhelming you with too much information.

Private tutors are available for SAT preparation but they are expensive. Some students benefit from this kind of one-on-one teaching, but before you decide on a particular tutor be sure to interview him or her. Your SAT preparation may suffer if you have a personality conflict with your tutor.

Although the SAT can seem like a horrible ordeal, it is a necessary part of your university education. As long as you prepare for the test you are sure to do well, so be sure to take advantage of the many opportunities for SAT preparation.
