A college education is one of the biggest expenses most people will incur their lifetime. Thankfully, the financial burden of an education can be alleviated with various funding sources such as grants or scholarships. Every year there are literally billions of dollars in scholarship money available. Students must find the sources of those scholarships and make the proper applications to access this significant source of funding. Start Early Planning for a college education takes time. Your search for college scholarships should begin in your sophomore or junior year in high school. There are even some scholarships which are awarded in junior high. Scholarship committees are often impressed with applications that come in several years in advance. This indicates a serious student who is planning for his or her future. Finding Scholarships Ask at your high school counseling office for suggestions about where to find scholarships. They should be able to offer several suggestions, but don't forget to do your own research. Be sure to ask at civic and community organizations, cultural institutions, your parents' employer, and your local Department of Education. The Internet can also be a great resource for finding scholarships. Even if you have secured a scholarship you can still apply for others. Keep up the search for scholarships and be sure to renew existing scholarships every year. Broaden Your Interests There are many types of scholarships. Some are based on financial need or academic achievement, but there are many others which are related to a particular field or interest. Extending your extracurricular activities may make you eligible for scholarships from a larger variety of organizations. Making the Scholarship Application Be sure to follow the requirements for the scholarship application. Be creative and try to make your application stand out from the others. Above all, be sure to meet the application deadline Apply for as many scholarships as you are eligible for. Some scholarships are quite small, but if you get enough of them the funds can add up substantially. Use Caution You will undoubtedly come across some "services" which offer to make scholarship applications for you - for a fee. There is no need to pay anyone for finding scholarships. Be especially aware of anyone who "guarantees" scholarship approval. This is a sure sign of a scam artist. With a little bit of diligence you will be able to find many scholarships that you can apply for. Organizations which offer scholarships are investing in the future, so show them that you are a serious student and concerned about your future and you are one step ahead of the crowd. |
